Description & history of the NA'NÂ' - MINT TEA
Description & history of the NA'NÂ' - MINT TEA
In the 19th century, the English, faced with the loss of the Slavic market with the Crimean War, sought new opportunities for their tea trade in Morocco. They opened counters in the ports of Mogador, Essaouira and Tangier. Its adoption happened quite naturally:'mint infusion (Na'nâ' in dialect Arabic) being the most widespread drink in Morocco, the tea was mixed with mint leaves in order to reduce the bitterness. The nomadic Tuareg tribes contributed to its diffusion, because its thirst-quenching virtues made it possible to survive the extreme conditions of the desert. Offering mint tea is now part of the rules of good manners in many Arab countries, including in the evening (good to know, the energizing side of tea is offset by the soothing side of mint).
